In 1963, the free-spirited mother, Rachel Flax, relocates to a small town in Massachusetts with her two daughters, Charlotte and Kate. Charlotte is perturbed by her mother's constant moving habit and her liberal lifestyle, often criticizing her mother's actions. Upon settling in the town, Rachel encounters a shoemaker named Lou, and a relationship blossoms between them. Concurrently, Charlotte develops an interest in a school bus driver named Joe, who, on the other hand, is also drawn to Rachel. As Charlotte attempts to conceal her relationship with Joe, her relationship with her mother becomes increasingly strained. However, the family learns to accept each other's differences, consequently strengthening their bonds.
