The Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to the Japanese civil society organization Nihon Hidankyo, also known as Hibakusha.

When announcing the decision, the Nobel Committee stated that the peace prize was awarded for demonstrating, through witness testimonies, that nuclear weapons should never be used again:

'This grassroots movement, composed of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, known as Hibakusha, is receiving the peace prize for its efforts to achieve a nuclear-free world and for showing, through witness testimonies, that nuclear weapons must never be used again.'

In the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences’ award statement, it was mentioned that "The new generations in Japan are passing on the experiences and messages of the survivors to future generations."

'One day, the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will no longer be with us. However, through a strong culture of remembrance and dedication to the cause, new generations in Japan are passing on the experiences and messages of the witnesses to future generations.'
