News of a theft has emerged from England following the robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris. A sketch belonging to South African leader Nelson Mandela, which was on display at the renowned St. George's Hall in Liverpool, has been stolen. Authorities have announced that an investigation related to the artwork has been initiated.
Merseyside Police announced that the theft occurred on October 13th. The artwork was left at the scene with its frame damaged, while security cameras captured someone leaving the historic building. The police stated that they have been reviewing the footage from the start and shared the suspect's photo with the public.
The stolen artwork is a piece titled 'Prison' from the limited edition 'Struggle Series' created by Mandela. The painting features Mandela's signature between handcuffed hands.
A spokesperson for the Liverpool City Council expressed deep regret over the theft of Mandela's painting from St. George's Hall. 'This artwork, a gift to the city from Dr. Makaziwe Mandela, held great significance for our city. We are assisting the police in their investigation and urge anyone with information about the theft to get in touch with us,' they said.
