Life Before Fame

On October 11, 1992, Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, who now goes by “Cardi B” was born to Trinidadian mother and a Dominican father. Growing up, she was mainly raised by her paternal grandparents in the South Bronx, which she oftens mentions as the biggest contributor to her thick accent. With her sister named Hennessy Carolina, Cardi B derived her name from another liquor brand, Bacardi.

When she was in her teens, Cardi B became a stripper after being fired from her employment in an Amish deli. In interviews, she often relishes that stripping became a way for her to get her life back and it saved her from a lot of things. She often lied to her mother and said that she worked as a babysitter instead of a stripper.

Slowly, Cardi B gained prominence through the Vine app in 2013.

Cardi B's smash single 'Bodak Yellow' from 2017 cemented her status in hip-hop. Her hit made her known not only in the US but also in other countries. In 2017, the rapper received two Grammy nominations for 'Best Rap Performance' and 'Best Rap Song,' making the song the first female rapper's solo top 10 success since fellow female rapper Nicki Minaj's 'Anaconda' reached #2 three years prior.

Since being part of the music industry for almost a decade now, Cardi B surely has already had some hits under her name. Some of her most popular songs include “WAP”, “Up”, and “I Like It”. As of writing, Cardi B only has one studio album, Invasion of Privacy, which was released in 2018. This is not an issue, though, since the female rapper often releases singles or gets featured in other artists’ songs.

Other Ventures and Partnerships

Aside from her musical endeavors, Cardi B also has other ventures in different fields. She was able to partner with American cosmetics company M.A.C. in 2017 and was also sponsored by Marc Jacobs when she appeared in the music video of “A-Z of Music”. In 2018, she also partnered with Tom Ford to create a Cardi B-inspired lipstick which sold out in just 24 hours. Most recently in 2021, she worked on her second collaboration with Reebok.

She also had some endorsements with Pepsi for three television commercials in the past few years. In 2021, she then joined Playboy as its resident creative director. Cardi B also developed a vodka-infused, vegan whipped cream called “Whipshots”.

With all of the rapper's businesses alongside her successful music career, it would be no surprise to know that she has already built a name and a fortune for herself. Cardi B’s estimated net worth is at $24 million which easily makes her one of the well-paid rappers of her time.

Now while we know that that amount can easily change over time, let us hope that Cardi B doesn’t stop giving us music so that she can continue building her empire while we all enjoy the art that is her music.
