Are you planning a dreamy vacation on Türkiye's Aegean coast, excited to wander cobblestone streets, enjoy a drink at a charming café, and soak up the Turkish Riviera vibes? If you're looking at the Urla Peninsula and can't decide between two of its most iconic towns, this guide is for you!
They're only 10 km (6.2 mi) apart! Even we got them mixed up on our first trip. However, after spending more time exploring Izmir's coastline and towns like Alaçatı, Çeşme, and Urla, we noticed the subtle but important differences.
Urla is one of Türkiye's westernmost points known for its natural beauty and ideal conditions for windsurfing. The area is rich in history and scenic landscapes.
To reach either town, you can rent a car in Izmir and drive the 75–80 km distance, book a private transfer, or take the Havaş shuttle from Izmir Airport or the main bus station (Izmir Otogar).
For example, on a random weekday in September, the average price per night for a hotel in Alaçatı was around USD 125, compared to USD 110 in Çeşme.
Of course, costs fluctuate based on season, hotel type, and amenities like breakfast or a pool, but this gives you an idea of what to expect.
Alaçatı has a more touristy atmosphere, with streets bustling during the summer season with both locals and foreign visitors. It’s lively, colorful, and filled with charming boutique cafes and shops.
Fewer foreign tourists venture here, and it’s a great spot for a relaxed getaway, especially if you’re looking for some quiet.
Alaçatı is perfect for those looking for fun and social nightlife, especially couples and friends. Meanwhile, Çeşme is more laid-back, ideal for families or those wanting to unwind.
However, they each have their charms. Alaçatı is known for its quaint streets, beautifully restored stone houses, and stylish cafes and shops that are perfect for a leisurely day of exploration.
In contrast, Çeşme offers a little more in the way of history, with the famous Çeşme Castle and a pretty marina to stroll around. It’s also a short trip from Greece’s Chios Island, making it a great day trip!

These cozy, charming hotels often have lovely courtyards, pools, and offer personalized service that will make you feel right at home.
Çeşme’s accommodation scene is quieter and more residential, with many local-style guesthouses and pansiyons. However, the boutique hotel trend is slowly making its way to Çeşme as well.
When we searched for hotels <1 km from the center, Alaçatı had about 250 results, while Çeşme had around 60, reflecting the towns' different tourism profiles.
You can expect to find dishes like köfte (meatballs), döner, and gözleme. About 90% of what we ate in Çeşme was local Turkish food.
Alaçatı, meanwhile, caters to a more international crowd, with restaurants serving a mix of Turkish and European dishes. The dining experience is also more aesthetically pleasing, with many restaurants and cafes designed to be Instagram-worthy.
Çeşme’s stores are mainly found along the Çeşme Çarşısı or at the marina, where you’ll find a mix of local goods and designer boutiques. Alaçatı, however, is famous for its boutique shops offering everything from flowy Aegean-style dresses to handmade pottery and jewelry.
The town’s bars, lounges, and clubs come alive after sunset, and you can expect the streets to buzz with energy until 2 or 3 am. Çeşme, on the other hand, is quieter at night and is perfect for an evening stroll or a relaxed dinner.
