Last month, the R1 chatbot released by DeepSeek quickly surpassed its American competitor, ChatGPT!
Since its launch, OpenAI's ChatGPT had almost no rivals. Although AI models from Elon Musk’s Grok, Meta, and Google have entered our lives, none had created the same impact—until DeepSeek came along.
Millions of people began comparing OpenAI with DeepSeek on social media, and they loved the new, entirely free chatbot.
Moreover, China had offered the same service that ChatGPT provides for $200 through DeepSeek, but at a much lower cost and for free.
DeepSeek faced a ban in Taiwan: Public sector workers and those at critical infrastructure facilities are prohibited from using it.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Digital Affairs announced the ban in government institutions on Friday. In its statement, the ministry said, 'DeepSeek AI service is a Chinese product' and highlighted the security risks involved.
It was stated that the service "poses a threat to national information security."
The ministry’s statement added that DeepSeek's R1 chatbot endangered Taiwan's 'information security' due to cross-border data transmission, information leakage, and other data security concerns.
In addition to Taiwan's restrictions, South Korea and Ireland will also ask DeepSeek to explain how it manages users' personal data.
Meanwhile, Italy launched an investigation into the R1 model earlier this week and has blocked the processing of Italian users' data.
