Director Lee Daniels Set To Make Two New Streaming Features

The Empire/Star co-creator has new projects on the way! The celebrated film and television director’s most recent film came out only last year, but his new works are right on its heels. If you have seen the works of this director, you know his works are a bit uneven, but average out to ranging from pretty good to essential viewing. Here are his two upcoming projects; the release date is still TBA.

Netflix optioned an exorcism-themed horror film based on the true story of the Ammons family’s alleged haunting in Gary, Indiana. Recent developments show that the film will star Glenn Close, Andra Day, Caleb McLaughlin, Rob Morgan, Aunjanue Ellis, and Mo'Nique, who also appeared in Daniels’ critically acclaimed drama Precious.

Daniels is also making a Hulu show about Sammy Davis, Jr. starring Elijah Kelley, who appeared in a small role in The Butler. Daniels is credited as the creator and director of the series.

  • Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire

The heartbreaking story of Precious, based on the debut novel by Sapphire and adapted by first-time screenwriter Geoffrey S. Fletcher, is still Daniels’ most critically acclaimed film.

  • Lee Daniel’s The Butler

This biopic centers around Cecil Gaines, who worked as the White House’s head butler for over 30 years serving eight presidents.

  • The United States vs. Billie Holiday

The title of this film refers to the U.S. government’s attempt to prevent singer Billie Holiday from singing the poignant ballad “Strange Fruit.”
