Renowned Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako, known for films like 'Timbuktu' and 'Life on Earth,' unveils his latest creation, 'Black Tea.' The film, described by Gaumont as a 'timeless, universal love story' set against the backdrop of cultural exchange, is set to have its world premiere this month in the Main Competition section of the Berlin Film Festival. Sissako introduces audiences to a fresh perspective on intercultural relationships through a captivating love story, delving into the complexities of human connection and understanding. "Black Tea" revolves around Aya, a young woman from Ivory Coast, who boldly rejects an arranged marriage and embarks on a new life in the city of Guangzhou, China.

Amidst the vibrant melting pot of African diaspora and Chinese culture, Aya finds employment in a tea boutique owned by Cai, a middle-aged Chinese man.

Addressing the challenges and beauties of cross-cultural relationships, "Black Tea" offers a glimpse into the "complex China-Africa dynamic" through the journey of Aya and Cai.

Starring Nina Mélo, Chang Han, and Wu Ke-Xi, the film is produced by Cinefrance Studios, Archipel 35, and Dune Vision.

Co-written by Sissako and Kessen Tall, the screenplay drew inspiration from an Afro-Chinese couple running a restaurant named "La Colline Parfumée."

Sissako was captivated by Guangzhou, known as the 'Chocolate City,' for its cultural diversity and its ability to 'encourage human relationships.'
