A project to construct a neighborhood using 3D printers began in Texas, USA, in 2022. This ambitious project, consisting of 100 homes, is set to be completed very soon.
Each home is constructed using a massive 3D printer. The 3D printer is 45 feet (13.716 meters) long and weighs over 4.75 tons. The construction process is, of course, different from the traditional methods we're used to. A special mixture is created using concrete powder, water, sand, and other materials. This mixture is then layered according to a pre-programmed design.
Fine details are added by humans. Thanks to 3D printing, waste in the construction process is minimized, the building process is faster, and energy-efficient buildings can be constructed.
There are a total of eight different home types. A home with three bedrooms and two bathrooms has an area of 146 square meters. Larger models fetch higher prices! The company that builds homes with 3D printers isn't just limited to Earth. In 2022, the company signed a $57.2 million contract with NASA to construct landing pads, roads, and structures such as homes on the Moon and Mars.
