From the same creators of the critically acclaimed German TV series 'The Dark' comes '1899,' a mystery horror drama set to premiere this November.
Understandably, the press release for the series did not reveal much about the storyline, but if it's anything as good as 'The Dark,' then we're definitely in for a late Halloween treat!
Here's everything we know so far:
Film fans would know that 1899 was first revealed in the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, mainly the first episode aptly named, 'The Ship.' If you missed the premier, you can still catch it when Netflix airs the 8-episode series on November 17.
If the promotional posters are anything to go by, 1899 hints at the mysterious circumstances surrounding multiple disappearances of ships and aircraft in parts of the North Atlantic Ocean known as the Bermuda Triangle.
While there have been numerous films in the past that dealt with the Bermuda Triangle mystery, the TV series centers around a shipful of immigrants on their way to New York at the end of the 19th century. Things begin to take an unexpected turn when the ship’s captain receives a message from Prometheus, a ship that went missing not long ago.
The series boasts an international cast; most of them have appeared in previous Netflix movies and TV series, including Andreas Pietschmann (The Dark), Lucas Lyngaard Tønnese and Clara Rasagern (The Rain), Miguel Bernardeau (Elite), Maria Erwolter (The Ritual), Rosalie Craig (The Queen’s Gambit), Maciej Musial (The Witcher), and Alexandre Willaume (Equinox).
We've known about 1899 as early as June of 2022 when a short teaser was released by Netflix. It showed us a group of confused travelers wondering why they were on this massive boat. It may have been just a minute-long video but the awe inspiring wardrobe and movie effects certainly piqued the interest of fans looking for the next period-piece series to binge on.
Four months later in October, a longer trailer was released with a soundtrack that's hard to miss- none other than Hendrix's version of 'All along the Watchtower.'
There will only be one season consisting of eight episodes for 1899, each promising to be more unsettling and puzzling than the last. Expect a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat supernatural thriller with breathtaking visual effects.
