On March 11th, 2022, Disney+ subscribers will likely be getting an addition to their watchlist for no extra cost. Like the streaming-only rollout of the last two Pixar films, Soul and Luca, the animation company's next film, Turning Red, will not go to theaters in any country with Disney+ available.
Meilin 'Mei' Lee (Rosalie Chiang) is a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian who lives an average life with her overbearing mother, except for the fact that she turns into a giant red panda when experiencing a strong emotional reaction of any kind. With the oncoming changes of adolescence, she has to balance her decisions of whether or not to follow the instructions of her strict mother (voiced by Sandra Oh).
Domee Shi writes and directs this new Pixar film, though she has worked at Pixar since 2015. Her rise to fame started at the release of her Oscar-winning Pixar short Bao, which accompanied the release of The Incredibles 2. Shi based the film in her hometown of Toronto, Canada, so it's safe to assume this story is especially crucial for her to tell. She will be the second woman receiving the directing credit of a Pixar film and the first woman to have a solo directing credit.
It is unclear whether Turning Red will be in theaters anytime soon, but judging by the limited release of the last Pixar film, we can expect something similar with this new film. For countries that do not have access to Disney+, Turning Red will be released theatrically.
