Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the writing/directed duo behind The Lego Movie, faced a disappointing interim between projects when they left their positions as directors of Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2017. During this unfortunate fiasco, a soon-to-be-successful animated feature developed from a story by Lord was years into production. In 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse became the most critically acclaimed film this team had co-produced.
In the post-credits scene of Into the Spider-Verse, an Oscar Isaac cameo as Spider-man 2099 assured viewers that a sequel was soon to follow. This time around, Miller shares screenwriting credit with Lord and popular co-writer David Callaham in the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One). The five producers of the 2018 film return for both parts, set to release in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The massive team involved worked on the two segments concurrently, and rumors of the films’ epic scale are already circulating.
The sequel films of the Spider-Verse franchise continue to follow Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a teenage Spider-Man who replaces the Peter Parker from his universe. Meeting up again with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), the Spider-Woman from a parallel universe, Morales will travel across the multiverse, fight an unrevealed villain, and see his extra-dimensional mentor Peter Parker (Jake Johnson). Audiences will allegedly see plenty of new characters in the multiverse, including a substantial presence from Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), and Spider-Man from the 1978 Japanese live-action series version (Takuya Yamashiro).
The teaser trailer debuted at Comic-Con Experience in December 2021, but no official trailer exists so far. Sony will release the film only in theaters starting October 7th, 2022. The first entry, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is available to rent or buy on numerous major streaming platforms.
