Cape Yason, which attracts significant attention from both local and international tourists, is a small peninsula with a natural allure. It lies along the Ordu-Samsun highway, and since January 2008, transport has been facilitated via the coastal road.
Cape Yason is among the vital cultural heritage sites that have survived from ancient times to the present day. It enchants visitors with its stunning geographical location and breathtaking views. On this remarkable peninsula, one can watch the sunset, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy peaceful walks accompanied by the soothing sound of the sea.
At the tip of the peninsula, there is a lighthouse constructed for sailors. Research suggests that the first shipyard on the Black Sea was also established here. Additionally, there is a historical church in the region with a history spanning 2700 years. This ancient structure deteriorated over time, and a new church was constructed in 1868 by the Greek inhabitants of the area.
Cape Yason is designated as a first-degree archaeological site and a second-degree natural protected area. It stands out as one of the most intriguing tourist attractions in Ordu, awaiting your discovery.
What is the Meaning of the Word Yason?
The name “Jason” derives from Iason (Jason), the son of Aison, king of Iolkos in Thessaly. Iason embarked on a journey to Georgia in search of the Golden Fleece to reclaim his kingdom from his uncle. According to legend, it is said that during this voyage, Yason rested on this peninsula and even held his wedding here. This is why the region was named after him.
Cape Yason and the Legend of the Golden Fleece
The legend of the Argonauts, from which Cape Yason derives its name, dates back to the 8th century BC. Iason, the nephew of King Pelias of Thessaly, sets out with Hercules to find the Golden Fleece. They traverse the Aegean Sea, the Dardanelles, and the Bosporus Straits, ultimately reaching the Black Sea. During their expedition, they stop at Giresun Island and Cape Yason. In this area, they are attacked by dragon-like birds that shoot feathers like arrows. After fending off the assault, they continue their journey but fail to find the Golden Fleece. They consequently curse these two regions.

Cape Yason is located within the boundaries of Çaytepe Village in the Perşembe district of Ordu. It is 30 km from the city centre of Ordu and 15 km from the centre of the Perşembe district. The cape can be accessed from the old Ordu-Samsun highway.
