Where is Yanartaş and Why is it So Special?

Yanartaş is located approximately 80 km southwest of Antalya city centre, near Çıralı Village in the district of Kemer. It is only a few kilometres away from the ancient city of Olympos. This area, located within the Beydağları Coastal National Park, is protected as a natural and archaeological site.

However, what makes Yanartaş truly special are the natural gas-fuelled flames that emerge from between the rocks and have been burning continuously for thousands of years. These flames continue to burn 24 hours a day, even today, without any human intervention. Especially at night, when the surroundings are completely dark, these natural flames create a magnificent sight.

At the end of the hiking trail leading to Yanartaş, you can see flames emerging from approximately 20 different points and experience this enchanting atmosphere amid nature. In this sense, Yanartaş is an open-air museum for both nature lovers and history and mythology enthusiasts.

The Geological Structure of Yanartaş and the Source of the Flames

The flames of Yanartaş are formed entirely by natural processes. Combustible gases such as methane, ethane and nitrogen, which emerge from fractured structures underground, spontaneously ignite when they come into contact with oxygen, creating continuously burning flames. This phenomenon is a result of geothermal activity and the internal structure of the rocks.

Geological research has revealed that these flames have been burning continuously for at least 2,500 years. Yanartaş is one of the longest-burning natural gas vents in the world. This makes it unique not only for Turkey but also on a global scale.

The Legend of Chimaera: A Natural Wonder Intertwined with Mythology

The ancient name of Yanartaş is ‘Chimaera.’ This name is based on a legendary creature from Greek mythology. Chimaera is a terrifying monster with a lion's head, a goat's body, a snake's tail, and flames shooting from its mouth.

According to the legend, the hero Bellerophontes, sent by the King of Lycia to slay the Chimaera, defeats the monster by riding his winged horse Pegasus. However, the Chimaera does not die; it is buried deep underground and continues to spew flames onto the earth's surface. The flames we see today at Yanartaş are, according to legend, the Chimaera's breath.

In ancient times, these flames served as natural lighthouses for sailors, helping them find their way at night. In this sense, Yanartaş is not just a natural phenomenon but also a region of vital importance to the ancient Lycian civilisation.

Yanartaş Entrance Fee and Visitor Information

Yanartaş is located within the boundaries of Beydağları Coastal National Park and is therefore protected and subject to an entrance fee. As of 2025, the general information is as follows:

  • Entrance Fee: 190 TL

  • MuseumPass: Unfortunately, it is not valid.

Visiting hours are flexible, but the area is open 24 hours a day. However, the recommended visiting hours are in the late afternoon and evening. Although the flames can be seen in daylight, they offer a much more spectacular view at night, contrasting with the darkness.

How to Get to Yanartaş?

There are several different ways to get to Yanartaş:

By private vehicle from Antalya Centre:

Yanartaş is approximately 80 km away. You can get there by taking the D400 motorway towards Kemer and turning off at the Çıralı junction. From Çıralı village, you can reach the entrance to Yanartaş on foot or by minibus.

Public Transportation:

Take a minibus from Antalya Bus Terminal to Kumluca or Kemer, get off at the Çıralı junction, and continue by taxi or on foot.

Walking Route:

To reach Yanartaş from the entrance point, you need to follow a 1.2 km long, wooded and rocky path. This walk is of medium difficulty and takes approximately 30–40 minutes. It is important to wear suitable footwear, and it is recommended to carry a torch, especially in the evening.

Best Time to Visit Yanartaş and Preparation Tips

Yanartaş can be visited throughout the year. However, the ideal time to visit is during the spring and autumn months. As daytime temperatures can be quite high during the summer months, it is recommended to visit early in the morning or around sunset.

Preparation tips before your visit:

  • Be sure to bring a water bottle.

  • Wear walking shoes or sports shoes.

  • A torch or headlamp is essential, especially for evening visits.

  • It is advisable to carry cash for the entrance fee.
