For Your Weekend Vintage Watch: 'Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)'

At the end of every month, I like to surf through old movies freshly added to streaming platforms' back catalogues and chill with popcorns on hand or a glass of white wine and chocolate if I’m feeling quirky.

So, today, Devil in a Blue Dress (1995) tops my list, featuring in one of the most superbly rated crime mystery movies of the 90s. The film has received 92% Rotten Tomatoes and a critics consensus that cites, 'Humor, interesting characters and attention to details that make the stylish Devil in a Blue Dress an above average noir.”

Starring some of Hollywood's finest, including Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Tom Sizemore and Jennifer Beals, Devil in a Blue Dress is set in the summer of 1948 Los Angeles, where World War II veteran finds himself drawn into the search of a mysterious woman.

Broke and desperate WWII ex-soldier Easy Rawlins searches for a job with a few prospects. Easy meets DeWitt Albright (Tom Sizemore), who's looking to hire someone to investigate the disappearance of Daphne Monet (Jennifer Beals).

DeWitt suspects that Daphne could be hiding out in one of the L.A. black jazz clubs. Cumbered by house bills and in need of money, Easy accepts the job but soon discovers that he’s facing more than he can handle.

Though the movie didn't arouse much of a stir back in the day, the audience praised Don Cheadle's show-stopping performance as Easy’s friend Raymond ‘Mouse’ Alexander. But then again, Cheadle always steals the show wherever he goes!

Devil in a Blue Dress is available on various streaming platforms, including Hulu and Prime Video and was recently added to HBO Max early this month.
