French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal Resigns

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has resigned from his position. Attal announced that he will submit his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron tomorrow.

In a press conference held after the release of the polls, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal made critical statements.

Attal stated that he had warned of three risks since the beginning of the campaign:

“The possibility of the Unbowed France party achieving an absolute majority, the National Rally party achieving an absolute majority, and the disappearance of the movement representing our values and principles. These three risks have been completely disregarded by the French people. Tonight, there is no absolute majority led by the far right. Being the Prime Minister was the greatest honor of my life.”

Attal explained that he decided to resign because his party did not achieve an absolute or relative majority in the National Assembly.

In his victory speech, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the Unbowed France (LFI) within the New People's Ecological and Social Union (NUPES), addressed Macron and Attal:

“Macron’s defeat has been clearly confirmed. Macron should accept defeat. Gabriel Attal must leave the prime ministership. Macron is obliged to assign the task of forming the government to the New People's Ecological and Social Union.”
