Meteorological experts are indicating that fluctuations occurring in the polar vortex of the North Pole could significantly impact global air circulation in the coming days and weeks. The weakening of this normally stable structure implies that we can expect to see sudden cooling and warming, severe storms, and rapid weather changes both in Turkey and on a global scale.
According to scientists, the polar vortex is defined as a potent low-pressure area in the stratosphere that traps extremely cold air masses by swirling them around itself. The World Meteorological Organization points out that the winds surrounding this structure can reach speeds of 200-250 km per hour. When the vortex remains strong, it preserves the weather order by keeping Arctic chills in the north; however, when it weakens, the jet stream begins to fluctuate, causing cold air masses to sag towards the middle latitudes, which can lead to widespread weather changes.
Meteorological models are hinting that the polar vortex may not maintain its usual stable structure this winter.
In Asia, it is anticipated that cold spells originating from Siberia will periodically sweep rapidly into China and Japan.
As for North America, the forecast suggests that both the US and Canada could face abrupt temperature drops and snowstorms, coupled with brief surges of warm weather.
Over in Europe, the sudden onset of cold weather and harsh wind transitions after mild conditions are noteworthy; irregularities in the jet stream are also making storm paths more unpredictable.
