Greta Thunberg, a climate activist renowned for her participation in protests across different countries and frequently making headlines for her support of Palestine, recently made a stop in Italy. Along with her fellow activists, she poured green paint into the tourist canal in Venice. This act led to Italian authorities imposing an entry ban on Thunberg, in addition to a fine of 150 euros.
Several activists from the group known as Extinction Rebellion spilled a liquid dyed green into the renowned Grand Canal of Venice. According to the activists, this paint did not contain any chemicals that could potentially harm the canal. Among the activists was the Swedish environmental advocate, Greta Thunberg.
The action, which did not adversely affect the boat and ferry traffic in the canal, was met with disapproval by Italian authorities. Kuca Zaia, the President of the Veneto Regional Administration, on the other hand, labeled it as vandalism. He argued that this action led to environmental pollution, pointing out the paradoxical nature of the situation.
Thunberg, who supported the action, was penalized by the Italian authorities with a 48-hour entry ban into the country and a fine of 150 euros.
