HBO’s ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’ Ends Its Third Season With Further Critical Acclaim

Though it did not receive as much attention as in past years, new episodes of A Black Lady Sketch Show on HBO were considered by critics to be just as strong as the first seasons. Using extreme specificity to generate its humor, A Black Lady Sketch Show remarkably finds universality - it’s one of those ironic outcomes that could only come from a show that appears specifically catered to the humor of black women. Since there’s no doubt anyone would find some of these sketches funny, here are a couple of highlight episodes to start with:

Season 1: “Born At Night, But Not Last Night”

The Season 1 finale was highlighted by viewers as one of the greatest collections of sketches on the show. Despite a relatively weak opening sketch, everything that follows is pure gold. The “courtroom kiki” sketch, a difficult start to a threesome, and, of course, a game show called “get the belt” all indicate the off-the-cuff genius of Robin Thede and her co-stars and guests.

Season 2: “If I'm paying these Chili's prices, you cannot taste my steak!”

A certain phrase has unexpected consequences in an opening highlight of Season 2. Thede and the rest of the group visit the TV show concept of “Get the Belt” with a similar skit called “Sit Down Somewhere Classic (1982),” and other familiar settings and characters are brought back as well, such as a great conversation with a manicurist, the perfect hair salon (perhaps too perfect), and a simultaneous skewering of meme culture and possession protectiveness.

Season 3: “Anybody Have Something I Can Flog Myself With?"

There are some great sketches in Season 3 as well; namely, a great jab about the inspiration quotes “lifestyle.” There’s also a returning gag from previous seasons of the “Basic Ball,” but this time around, it’s set at a funeral for maximum awkwardness. Ashley Nicole Black once again has great chemistry with the other cast members.
