The novel is set in 14th-century Barcelona and follows Hugo Llor, who aspires to be a shipbuilder.
Hugo Llor is a 12-year-old street kid who spends the majority of his time on the streets. His days are likewise spent in the shipyards, and his ambition is to work as a shipbuilder, albeit his future is unknown.
Hugo's life is not easy; he is a lonely youngster whose mother is forced to leave him, but he has the care and protection of Arnau Estanyol, a respected old man.
Heirs to the Land is based on Ildefonso Falcones' novel Los Herederos de la Tierra, published by Grijalbo in 2016. Heirs to the Land is a sequel to Cathedral of the Sea, directed by Jordi Frades, who also directed the first series.
Diagonal TV is producing the series, which will begin filming in Barcelona in November 2020. The Tamarit Beach in the province of Tarragona, as well as the Castle of Hostalric in the province of Girona, were used as filming sites.
The series will first be available for a 12-month period on Netflix, followed by a three-month period on Atresmedia and Televisió de Catalunya.
