In short, Jaws changed horror films as well as all future blockbusters forever. The film's simple premise, intricate layers of characters, impressive technology, and flawless suspenseful direction from Steven Spielberg made all other thrillers surrounding Jaws feel overwrought or underdeveloped. Technically, it can be watched by kids (and absolutely was when it came out in 1975) but is scary when watched from any age. Most infamously, Jaws created a generation of film viewers who refused to go into the ocean. Thanks to Spielberg and composer John Williams' brilliant work, the idea of what could be lurking in the water was as scary as the shark itself.
