The countdown has begun for one of the most spectacular celestial events of the year in Turkey, the Perseid meteor shower. As in previous years, this year's unprecedented Perseid meteor shower will take place in mid-August and will be visible the most throughout Turkey on the night of 12 to 13 August. Experts have announced that up to 100 meteors per hour will be visible. So, where and how can the Perseid meteor shower be observed in Turkey? Can the meteor shower be seen with the naked eye without a telescope?

The Countdown to the Perseid Meteor Shower in Turkey Has Begun!

The meteoroid fragments left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet will offer a unique visual feast in the sky. The Perseid meteor shower, this year's most impressive meteor shower, will be particularly dazzling in the Northern Hemisphere and will be clearly visible from Turkey.

Mark Your Calendars: We're Meeting for a Sky Show on 12 August!

On the night of 12 August, we will witness the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. According to experts, approximately 100 meteors per hour will streak across the sky at speeds reaching 59 km/second. This breathtaking natural phenomenon will be easily observable from all 81 provinces of Turkey.

However, for the best experience, it is recommended to choose a dark, open sky away from city lights.

Best Spots to Watch the Perseid Meteor Shower in Istanbul:

  • Asian Side: Şile Kilimli Bay, Polonezköy  

  • European Side: Kilyos Beach

Experts advise, ‘Get as far away from the city centre as possible and bring food and drinks with you.’ 

The best time to watch is recommended to be in the early hours of the morning.
