The mandatory winter tire regulation kicked off today. This requirement, obligatory for commercial vehicles transporting passengers and goods on intercity highways, will persist until April. Drivers beware, penalties await those who neglect to equip their vehicles with winter tires. But what's the cost of winter tires? And why is their use compulsory?
The mandatory winter tire policy's implementation date has been moved up this year from December to November. Commercial vehicles are required to adhere to this winter tire policy until April 15, 2026. Those who fail to comply with the obligation to use winter tires will be fined 5,856 TL.
It was expressed that the aim of the application is to prevent vehicles unprepared for adverse weather conditions from blocking the road and jeopardizing traffic safety. Winter tires provide good road grip in snowy and muddy conditions when the temperature drops below 7 degrees. It is recommended for use in private vehicles for safety reasons.
What should a winter tire be like?
When buying tires, attention should be paid to the production date. Tires that have reached their shelf life should not be preferred.
Winter tire prices start from 2,000 lira. Depending on the brand and quality, these prices can reach up to 5,000 TL. For larger-sized tires, the cost can escalate to as much as 15,000 lira.
The cost for tire disassembly and assembly is around 1,000 TL for rims 16 inches and under, while for those over 17 inches, the price ranges between 1,200 and 1,500 TL.
In tire hotels, the storage fee is generally around the same as the cost of changing four tires.
