Recently, we’ve been encountering the impressive face of artificial intelligence more frequently: this time, it’s the “world’s first musculoskeletal robot”!
A Poland-based startup, Clone Robotics, has shared a new video of a synthetic human without a face, called Protoclone. Reminiscent of the Terminator movie for social media users, the robot is a 6-foot prototype machine. Its designers are introducing Protoclone V1 as 'the world’s first bipedal musculoskeletal android.'
Protoclone features fake bones, joints, tendons, muscles, and even a circulatory system!
Clone Robotics is particularly proud of the fact that this human-like machine walks on two feet. However, when compared to its competitors, Protoclone V1 is a bit behind in this area. Elon Musk’s Optimus and Boston Dynamics’ Atlas have more realistic movements and body shapes that resemble humans more closely.
Protoclone, however, stands out with its body that includes 1,000 artificial muscle fibers and 500 sensors!
Aside from its lack of a face, the prototype has more than 200 movement abilities. Its artificial muscles are connected to 206 bones, just like in humans. Currently, the prototype operates with pneumatics (based on air pressure), but future plans include a hydraulic system using pistons and liquids.
Protoclone also has an electric pump that circulates water in place of blood, similar to how a human heart pumps blood.
This electric pump operates at 500 watts of power. Externally, its muscular and skeletal systems appear quite realistic.
The company aims to produce super-intelligent androids with human-level dexterity to solve common problems in daily life.
The launch of Protoclone is claimed by Clone’s co-founder Dhanush Radhakrishna to be the “zero point of the android era,” though this has sparked some debates.
