‘Metal Lords’ Is Yet Another Netflix Comedy That Audiences Can’t Resist

The new Netflix original film Metal Lords was released on April 8th, 2022, to the usual average ratings of spring releases. After a late-2021 string of successes that garnered acclaim and awards nominations, the original content from the well-known streamer has stalled in quality, as is often the case during this time of year. Is this a calculated move to hold off until the later summer blockbuster months? Check it out for yourself!

In this coming-of-age comedy-drama, Kevin learns from his best friend Hunter about the ethos of “metal” just in time to play together for the upcoming Battle of the Bands.

As evidenced by their relatively weak output so far this year, Netflix has proven to be the producer of lowest-common-denominator films that years ago it worked so hard to not be (thanks to the release of obvious awards contenders Marriage Story and The Irishman). Of course, Netflix did release The Power of the Dog and The Lost Daughter at the end of 2021, but it seems like a balance of generic material with perfectly timed awards season features.

The critics cannot complain too much since Metal Lords hits all the right plot points for audiences to connect with. Anyone expecting something tantamount to the power of heavy metal music will be unequivocally disappointed, but they might not have read what kind of genre to anticipate in Metal Lords
