Mete Gazoz: From Youth Prodigy to Olympic Champion – The Inspiring Journey in Archery

Mete Gazoz (born June 8, 1999, Istanbul) is a Turkish Olympic archer. He started his international sports career in 2013, reached 2nd place in the world rankings in the men's Olympic bow category on May 10, 2021, and won Turkey's first Olympic gold medal in archery at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by defeating Italian rival Mauro Nespoli 6-4.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1999 to a family originally from Giresun, Mete's father, former national archer Metin Gazoz, and mother, Istanbul Archery Club president Meral Gazoz, played significant roles in his life. He began archery in 2010 and developed his skills in archery alongside interests in swimming, basketball, painting, and piano. He completed his primary and high school education at İhlas College.

Initial Success and European Games

Mete's first international success came in 2013 at the World Youth Archery Championships in Wuxi, China, where he won a silver medal. He represented Turkey in the 2015 European Games in Baku but was eliminated after ranking 46th.

European Championships and Rio Olympics

He won a silver medal at the 2016 European Archery Championships in Nottingham and was the youngest athlete in the Turkish delegation at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He won his first match but was eliminated in the second round.

Multiple Achievements from 2017 to 2019

Between 2017 and 2019, Mete achieved various successes, including becoming the world 3rd in Argentina, winning gold in Spain, earning four gold medals in Berlin, and breaking youth world and senior European records in Romania. He was also named the best male athlete in classic bow in 2018 by the World Archery Federation (WA) and joined Forbes Turkey's '30 Under 30' club.

Tokyo Olympics Triumph

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Mete won gold in the individual classic bow category by defeating Italian Mauro Nespoli. He also competed in the mixed team category, finishing 4th.

Recent Achievements

Mete sold his bow from the Tokyo Olympics to support the education of children affected by the 2023 Kahramanmaraş-Gaziantep earthquake. On August 6, 2023, he became the champion of the 2023 World Archery Championships, defeating Eric Peters after beating Marcus D'Almeida in the semifinals.
