New 'The Handmaid's Tale' Trailer Shows June Discussing a Return to Gilead

Fans of 'The Handmaid's Tale' have been riding a roller coaster since the series first premiered in 2017. The Emmy-award-winning drama, set in the dystopian Republic of Gilead, is known for pushing the boundaries of television. Now the show is about to release another installment, and if the most recent trailer is to be trusted, then it looks like things are going to get dicey. Elizabeth Moss, who plays the main character June, told ET Canada in April, 'There's so much happening in every single episode.'

Last we saw June, she was covered in blood and holding her daughter Nichole after literally tearing Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) to pieces. It was a powerful climax, one that many of the viewers found both satisfying and disturbing, even after considering the nature of the Commander, who kept June prisoner in his home for so long. Now we're left with the question: what comes next?

We know that Fred Waterford's murder occurred in No Man's Land, which appears to be a lawless space between Gilead and Canada. We don't know if laws are enforced there, or if they are, which country enforces them. But in the new trailer, released August 24, June is warned by Mr. Tuello (Sam Jaegar) that Gilead won't just let this go. Hulu confirmed this statement in a synopsis, saying that June will in fact face consequences.

It seems as though June might have to go on the run. In the trailer we see Nick (Max Minghella) speaking on the telephone to what appears to be June saying, 'Gilead wants to see you suffer. You have to keep yourself safe.' Another man, dressed as a Commander, says that June Osborne is a cancer that has to be cut out. It is clear that the powers that be are coming for her and considering Gilead's military might, they might have power beyond their borders. Plus, there's no knowing what they will do to get their hands on her. They might not let borders or Canadian law stop them from doing what they think needs to be done.

Perhaps the most shocking thing about all of this is the final moments of the trailer where June announces that they won't be looking for somebody going back into Gilead. We see a woman--potentially a former handmaid--cocking a shotgun, and preceding that images of Luke (O-T Fagbenle) saying that he is going. What the trailer doesn't point out is that they are vowing to enter a heavily militarized dictatorship with Guardians on every corner. This is going to be good. Keep an eye out for more updates, and don't forget to tune in on Hulu on September 14. Under his eye.
