Every once in a while, it's good to take a break from new releases and enjoy the ones that passed you by. Our pick for today is the 2013 indie film, Prince Avalanche starring Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch.
The comedy-drama film is written and directed by David Gordon Green, whose screenplay is based on the 2011 Icelandic movie Either Way.
Centered in 1988, the meditative and weird Alvin (Paul Rudd) and the moody and insecure Lance (Emile Hirsch), his girlfriend’s brother, take a break from the city to spend their summer in solitude repainting traffic lines on a country road damaged by wildfire.
Their time together teaches them things they didn't know about each other, as well as, their drawbacks. Faced with various challenges, including unexpected breakup and parenthood, the duo 'Alvinlance” learn to encourage each other, forming an unlikely bond.
Though small-scale, Prince Avalanche certainly hits the sweet spot for a majority of the audience, scoring 82% Rotten Tomatoes, 6.3/10 on IMDb and 73% Metacritic score.
Brain D. Johnson from Maclean's Magazine acclaimed, 'Movies don't get much quirkier than Prince Avalanche, a picture that's every bit as odd as its title, which I still don't get even after seeing the movie. Not that it matters, I did get the movie (I think), and I grew to like it by the time it was over.'
Though Prince Avalanche doesn’t feature a wide ensemble cast, other actors joining Rudd ad Hirsch include Lance LeGault as Truck Driver, Joyce Payne as Lady and Gina Grande as Madison.
