The Hulu original miniseries draws inspiration from the true-crime bestseller of the same name by Jon Krakauer, published in July 2003. Set in the year 1984, Under the Banner of Heaven narrates the events leading to the murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty and her infant daughter in the suburb of Salt Lake Valley, Utah.

Detective Jeb Pyre investigates occurrences within the large Lafferty family and discovers hidden secrets concerning the origins of the LDS religion and the horrifying outcomes of unbelief. Pyre begins to question his belief.

Fresh off the Spider-Man scene, Andrew Garfield takes the leading role of detective Jeb Pyre in this miniseries. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Brenda Wright Lafferty. Other cast members include Sam Worthington as Ron Lafferty, Denise Gough as Dianna Lafferty, Wyatt Russell as Dan Lafferty, Billy Howle as Allen Lafferty, Gil Birmingham as Bill Taba, Adelaide Clemens as Rebecca Pyre, Rory Culkin as Samuel Lafferty, Seth Numrich as Robin Lafferty, Chloe Pirrie as Matilda Lafferty, Sandra Seacat as Josie Pyre and Christopher Heyerdahl as Ammon Lafferty.

The seven-part series is created and executive produced by Dustin Lance Black. Joining him as executive producers are Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan of Aggregate Films, David Mackenzie and Gillian Berrie and Ron Howard for Imagine Television.
