Peaceful Green Spaces in Istanbul: Best Urban Forests and Groves

Kapak Görseli

There are many groves of various sizes spread all over Istanbul. These groves are generally concentrated on the slopes overlooking the Bosphorus, and today they continue to exist as wooded areas surrounded by residential areas on both sides of the city.

The vast majority of forests in Istanbul are natural areas that existed in the past, and some of them have been preserved despite being destroyed during the urbanisation process. Some of them have a long history dating back to the Byzantine period. During the Ottoman period, most of these forests belonged to sultans or statesmen, and the dignitaries of the period used to spend certain times of the year in the mansions or farms they built in these groves. Many forests from this period continue to be known by the names of their owners. So, where are the best parks in Istanbul? Where are the calmest parts of Istanbul? And where to have a picnic in Istanbul? Let's explore together 👇
