Pirates of the Caribbean Movies in Order: Follow Captain Jack Sparrow’s Adventures

When talking about Pirates of the Caribbean, only two things come into mind: the Disney ride or the movie series. And if you are in the lookout for the latter, then you are in the right place!

The Pirates of the Caribbean movie series has been a somewhat controversial yet magical film franchise led by famous stars such as Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, Geoffrey Rush as Hector Barbossa, Kevin McNally as Joshamee Gibbs, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann, just to name some. It has been 19 years since the first movie came out, yet moviegoers could never get enough of the five movies set in a fictional time wherein pirates roamed the Caribbean seas.

If you have not yet watched any of the films, then this is now your time to do so. This will be your guide in what to expect when you watch the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Runtime: 143 minutes

  • Governor Weatherby Swann, his daughter Elizabeth, and the crew of the HMS Dauntless experience a shipwreck in 1720 while sailing to Port Royal, Jamaica, and retrieve a kid named Will Turner. Elizabeth notices a golden pirate medallion dangling from his neck and snatches it.

  • Captain James Norrington is promoted to commodore and proposes to Elizabeth eight years later. Her corset causes her to pass out and drown, causing the medallion to pulse. Elizabeth is rescued by Captain Jack Sparrow, who has just arrived in Port Royal to commandeer a ship.

  • When Norrington suspects Jack of being a pirate, a chase follows. Will, now a blacksmith, runs across Jack. They fight, and Jack is arrested. The Black Pearl strikes Port Royal that night in quest of the medallion.

  • The Pearl's crew kidnaps Elizabeth and takes her to meet Captain Barbossa. To hide her identity as the governor's daughter, Elizabeth uses the surname Turner.

  • Barbossa tells that the medallion is one of 882 gold pieces taken from Hernán Cortés' treasure on Isla de Muerta as a payment to end the genocide against the Aztecs, but Cortés refused it because he was too selfish, and the Aztec gods cursed the treasure. Barbossa and his crew were cursed by this, turning them into immortals who appeared as skeletons in moonlight.

  • All but one of the parts have been returned by Barbossa and his crew, with Elizabeth's pendant being the remaining piece. Barbossa kidnaps her, mistaking her for the daughter of William 'Bootstrap Bill' Turner, whose blood is required to break the curse.

  • When Lord Cutler Beckett, chairman of the East India Trading Company, arrives with arrest warrants for Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, as well as Commodore James Norrington, who helped Captain Jack Sparrow escape, the wedding is called off.

  • After losing the Navy's flagship, HMS Dauntless, in a hurricane while following Jack, Norrington resigned and vanished. Meanwhile, aboard the Black Pearl, Jack is visited by Will's father, Bootstrap Bill Turner. Bootstrap is a member of Davy Jones' crew on the Flying Dutchman

  • Jack made a deal with Jones to raise the Pearl from the depths, and now he must join the Dutchman's crew or the Kraken will bring him to Davy Jones' Locker.

  • Beckett pledges to set Elizabeth free if Will returns with Jack's magical compass, which points to whatever direction the possessor desires most.

  • Lord Cutler Beckett murders everybody linked with piracy in Port Royal and instructs Davy Jones to destroy all pirate ships in order to gain control of the oceans.

  • The nine Pirate Lords are summoned to Shipwreck Cove to hold the Brethren Court after condemned prisoners chant 'Hoist the Colours.'

  • Hector Barbossa, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, Tia Dalma, and the surviving crew of the Black Pearl consisting of Marty, Cotton, Pintel, Ragetti, and Joshamee Gibbs plot to rescue Captain Jack Sparrow, Pirate Lord of the Caribbean Sea, who never named a successor before being dragged to Davy Jones' Locker.

  • The group meets Captain Sao Feng, Pirate Lord of the South China Sea, who possesses the Locker's nautical charts in Singapore.

  • Will makes a secret deal with Feng to give him Jack in exchange for the Pearl, which he plans to use to save his father Bootstrap Bill Turner from the Flying Dutchman.

  • A man is recovered from the water off the coast of Spain in the mid-eighteenth century and taken to King Ferdinand of Spain, where he claims to be a crewmate of Juan Ponce de León, who vanished 200 years previously while seeking for the Fountain of Youth.

  • Captain Jack Sparrow is brought before King George II seventeen years after the battle of Calypso's maelstrom, after a failed attempt to save his first mate, Joshamee Gibbs, from execution in London.

  • The king asks Jack to lead an expedition to find the Fountain of Youth before King Ferdinand and the Spanish Navy find it.

  • Captain Hector Barbossa, who was now a private citizen, is captaining the expedition, though only requires Sao Feng’s navigational charts, rather than Jack.

  • A twelve-year-old Henry Turner joins the Flying Dutchman thirteen years after the battle of Calypso's maelstrom and informs his father, Will, that the curse that binds Will to the Dutchman and only allows him to go on land once every ten years can be removed by the Trident of Poseidon.

  • Will feels Henry's plan to persuade Captain Jack Sparrow to help him find it is impossible and tells Henry to leave.

  • Will and the Dutchman then swim away, but Henry swears to track down Jack and the Trident.

With Pirates of the Caribbean being a staple in every household, there is no denying that we certainly need the next movie. Like, come on, 5 years has already been long enough! But while we are still waiting for the Pirates of the Caribbean stars to, you know, settle their personal issues in life, let us just enjoy the fact that we get to spend more time trying to digest every single theory there is in the Pirates of Caribbean movie series.
