The famous actor died on September 29, 2024, at one of his daughters' homes in California, but the news of his death was not made public until October 23.

Ely's daughter, Kirsten Casale Ely, announced his death on her social media account. In her statement, she said, "My father was someone people called a hero. He was an actor, a writer, a coach, a mentor, a family man, and a leader."
