Sapanca Lake is located between Sakarya and Kocaeli. It forms a natural border between these two provinces. Sapanca Lake, a freshwater lake of tectonic origin, is located within the borders of Arifiye, Sapanca, Serdivan and Kartepe districts.

Evliya Çelebi describes Sapanca Lake with these words:

'The circumference of Sapanca Lake is 24 miles. There are seventy-six villages like towns around it. Since all the people drink the water of this estuary, the color of their faces is red. Although their crops are many, they have no vineyards. Their gardens are more than enough. At the edge of this lake there is a kind of melon and watermelon that only a donkey can pull two of them. There are eighty boats and grain boats (grain boats) in this lake that take men, timber and goods from the village. They catch seventy or eighty kinds of fish in this lake and make a profit. Freshwater fish such as trout, carp and pike are very tasty. The depth of the lake is twenty fathoms in most places. Its water is very pure and clear. The women of the villages on its shore never apply soap when they wash their clothes.
