Cordozar Calvin Broadus aka Snoop Dogg was born in Long Beach, California on October 20, 1971. His parents would split soon after he was born and his father would remain predominantly absent from his life. The rapper has two stepbrothers from his mother.

Growing up, he was given the nickname Snoop for his love of the cartoon character from Peanuts. Snoop was immersed in music at a young age. He would sing and play the piano at the Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church and learned to rap by the time he entered sixth grade. His mother struggled to make ends meet and young Snoop would bag groceries and deliver newspapers to help the family. Despite his mother’s insistence to stay in the choir, Snoop embraced the gangster lifestyle by the time he was a teenager. He became a member of the Rollin’ 20s Crips gang and was arrested for possession of cocaine not long after graduating from high school. It would only be the first of several run-ins with the law.

Snoop, his cousins Nate Dogg and Lil’ ½ Dead, along with friend Warren G would start recording homemade tapes. They would call themselves 213- after the then area code of Long Beach. A mixtape containing one of Snoop’s solo freestyle song “Hold On” would wind up in the hands of infamous N.W.A. rapper and producer Dr.Dre. The song impressed the producer enough that he would ask an N.W.A. affiliate to coach the young rapper on how to sharpen his rapping and song-writing skills.

In August 1993, Snoop was charged with first-degree murder for the shooting of Philip Woldermariam, a rival gang member. Two months later, Snoop’s debut album, Doggystyle, was released by Death Row Records. It would cement the label’s and Snoop’s reputation for embodying the hardcore gangster lifestyle. Produced by Dr. Dre, the album would debut at number one on the Billboard charts. The album’s single “Who am I? (What’s My Name?)” would peak at no.8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Gin and Juice” would become one of the most played songs in the U.S.

His next album, Tha Doggfather, would repeat this success three years later. Cleared of all charges in connection with the murder of Woldermariam, Snoop made sure the album had none of the negativity associated with Death Row.

The death of close friend and label mate Tupac Shakur and that of rival East Coast rapper Biggie Smalls would find Snoop canceling his 1997 tour. Word on the street is that Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight had a hand with the murder of Biggie and it won’t be long before Snoop’s feud with the label over his contract and royalty payments came to a head.

The rapper would soon jump ship to Master P’s No Limit Records and would release three albums before joining Priority/Capitol/EMI Records in 2002. In 2004, Snoop would sign with Geffen Records and release the album R&G: The Masterpiece, featuring songs produced by the duo, The Neptunes. The first single, “Drop It Like It’s Hot” featuring Pharell would become a massive hit and would give Snoop his fourth number one single. He would make history by becoming the first artist to release the track “It’s the D.O.G.” as a ringtone before its official release as a single.

A trip to Jamaica would soon find Snoop converting to Rastafarianism. Now re-christened as Snoop Lion, he released a reggae album, Reincarnated, alongside a documentary about his spiritual awakening. It won’t be long before Snoop would revert to his original stage name after severe criticism from the Rastafarian community for “outright fraudulent use of Rastafari Community’s personalities and symbolism”. It is to be recalled that Snoop strongly believed that he is Bob Marley reincarnated.

2018 would find Snoop releasing his first gospel album, Bible of Love. Now a full-blown born-again Christian, the album saw him singing about his newfound faith in his Lord, Jesus Christ. He would proceed to make four more albums before coming full circle and buying Death Row Records on February 9, 2022.

In addition to his music, Snoop has appeared on television and in films. Staying true to his “pimp” image, he has directed several adult films under several pseudonyms. He would start his own production company, Snoopadelic Films, in 2005.
