The global phenomenon Squid Game is set to return this December with its highly anticipated second season, and fans couldn’t be more excited! The show’s creator, South Korean writer Hwang Dong-hyuk, has teased what’s in store for Player 456 as he faces an entirely new challenge. In an exclusive interview with Deadline, Hwang revealed that Season 2 draws inspiration from South Korea's financial struggles, promising a gripping and emotionally charged narrative. Netflix's global hit series Squid Game is returning to screens with its second season on December 26.

Fans will recall that in the first season, 456 players joined the competition because they were drowning in debt and engaged in a deadly struggle to win the cash prize.

The show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, previously shared that the story of the first season was inspired by South Korea's financial collapse.

He also admitted in interviews that he decided to create the second season primarily to make more money.

According to Deadline, Hwang Dong-hyuk explained the differences between the first and second seasons. The South Korean director and screenwriter stated, 'The second season has a much more expansive storyline than the first. There will be new games in the upcoming season. I drew inspiration from traditional Korean games found online, but I wanted them to remain simple rather than overly complex.'

Hwang Dong-hyuk also revealed significant hints about Player 456.

'Aside from the games, the characters have changed as well. Of the former players, only Player 456 will appear this season. While the story seems to be about Gi-Hun seeking revenge against the perpetrators, there’s a much bigger message. The series will make viewers question whether we have the willpower to make the world a better place. Because we’ve become deeply divided by race, religion, and language, split into groups, and turned against each other,' he said.

The Squid Game writer also remarked in an interview, "I created the second season because I don’t want to live in a divided society."
