Some notable differences emerged between the rankings of 2023 and 2024. The organization evaluated cities based on six key criteria:

  • Economic and business performance

  • Tourism performance

  • Tourism infrastructure

  • Tourism policy and attractiveness

  • Health and safety

  • Sustainability

Last year’s most popular destination—meaning the city that received the highest number of international flights—was Bangkok, which saw a 37% increase in 2023-2024.

As tourism demand surged this year, international flights rose by 19%. With 793 million international arrivals, Europe remained the world's most visited region, while Bangkok secured the top spot.

Istanbul ranked second, with a 14% increase in international flights for the 2023-2024 season.

Following Istanbul was London, a favorite among European travelers.

However, despite ranking third, London's growth rate was only 7%, making it one of the cities with the lowest increase on the list. This raises curiosity about its position in next year’s rankings.

With a 19% increase, Hong Kong became the fourth most visited city in the world.

The city has gained immense popularity on social media, attracting tourists from around the world seeking a unique destination. Hong Kong’s appeal is expected to grow even further.

Mecca secured the fifth spot, experiencing a 20% increase in international flights.

Last year, it was ranked 10th, making a notable jump in the rankings.

Another highlight of the list was Antalya, a staple of summer tourism, which continued to gain international popularity.

The city saw a 17% increase in visitors between 2023 and 2024. Other notable destinations on the list included Dubai, Macau, Paris, and Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, recorded the highest growth rate, with a 73% increase in international visitors.

According to the study, the United States, Turkey, and China are expected to become the world's top three countries in terms of international flight volume by 2030.
