Turkey has found itself under the influence of Siberian cold weather. Particularly in the Eastern and Central regions, it has been observed that temperatures have plummeted below freezing. In Sivas, the temperature dropped to as low as minus 30 degrees. Amidst the widespread freezing, the only place that remained unfrozen was the lake called 'the evil eye bead of the steppe,' Gökpınar Lake.
So, why doesn't Gökpınar Lake freeze?
In Sivas, one of the coldest spots in Central Anatolia, the temperature plummeted to minus 30 degrees. Lakes, rivers, and waterfalls in Sivas froze solid, turning the city into a veritable ice kingdom, with one notable exception.
The Gökpınar lake in Gürün district of Sivas, remarkably, did not freeze even when the mercury hit minus 30. In fact, it was observed to be practically boiling, defying the chill.
Gökpınar Lake, one of the world's clearest bodies of water, is formed from selenium-rich water that bubbles up from its bed at a constant temperature of 17 degrees. This means that the lake's temperature remains unchanged throughout both summer and winter, resulting in it never freezing over.
Even in the winter months, this lake appears to be boiling, leading to its nickname 'the evil eye bead of the steppe' due to its striking turquoise color.
When the 17-degree water of the lake meets the negative 30-degree air, it generates steam as if it were boiling. The water vapor skimming across the lake's surface captivates the spectators. Ducks, swans, and other creatures are relishing this warm lake amidst the icy air.
