Deputy Chief of Police in Washington D.C, Jeffery Carroll, reported that the assailant approached the guards during their patrol duty. 'We've established that the suspect began firing at two National Guard members immediately after turning the corner,' he stated.

Carroll went on to recount how other National Guard personnel in the area responded upon hearing the gunshots. 'They intervened and were able to keep the suspect on the ground until law enforcement arrived at the scene within a few minutes of him being shot,' he explained.

Meanwhile, U.S. media outlets, citing security sources, announced that the FBI will initially investigate the attack as a 'potential act of terrorism.' The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal of Afghan origin. It was reported that he had been living in the Bellingham area of Washington state since the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021.
