When Alyssa was still very young, her parents went to prison.

Subsequently, her grandparents took legal custody of her and her three younger siblings.

The nine-year-old girl lived four houses away from Alyssa's family. She was often visiting Alyssa and her siblings to play games. Olten's mother Patricia Preiss claims that she begged to go to Alyssa's house for the purpose of playing games on the night she was killed.

Elizabeth's mother last saw her around 5 p.m.

The mother, who had not come home by that time, began to feel that something was not right.

After it was learned that Elizabeth had been kidnapped, FBI officers questioned Alyssa and confiscated her diary.

Later, the authorities came across a shallow hole resembling a grave at the back of Alyssa's house.

Although Alyssa said she only likes to dig holes, they discovered another grave later in the investigation.

This tomb was covered with leaves behind the Bustamante residence. Later, Elizabeth's remains were found inside.

Alyssa was arrested and charged with first-degree murder by prosecutors.

Alyssa, who claimed to have strangled and stabbed Elizabeth in the chest before slitting her throat, had buried her in a shallow grave she had dug with her bare hand.

The judges did not accept Alyssa's traumatic past as a justification and concluded that Alyssa would be tried as an adult.

About two years after the murder, Alyssa accepted a plea bargain of confession to second-degree murder in order to avoid the death penalty. She could come to eligible status for parole in 30 years as part of the plea deal.
