60-year-old retired security officer Laurence Watkins has been registered by the Guinness World Records as the 'person with the longest personal name in the world'. Watkins earned this title in 1992, but it was initially registered as the 'longest Christian name in the world'. This year, Guinness made a change and altered the record to 'personal name'. Thus, the longest name in the world now consists of 2,253 words.
So, was this name given to Laurence at birth?
No.
Watkins decided to change his name in 1990. After reading the Guinness Book of Records from cover to cover, he thought he needed to find a different method and added a total of 2,250 extra names to his name. Of course, it wasn't easy at all.
When he wanted to officially register the name, which filled six pages, the Population Director objected. Watkins, however, took the case to the High Court and won his name by court order. In some official documents, this pages-long name is abbreviated. In fact, following this incident, New Zealand decided to change its laws and now citizens cannot use names exceeding 70 characters.
