Deep within the heart of Düzce's Konuralp region lies a treasure waiting to be fully unveiled: the ancient city of Prusias ad Hypium. Beneath the layers of time and human intervention, the remains of a civilization that can be traced back to the 3rd century BCE are slowly being brought back to life. The site has borne witness to countless chapters of history, but the current excavation journey has been one of the most significant endeavors to understand its illustrious past.
Under the permission and guidance of the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage and Museums, the Düzce Municipality has been meticulously and passionately overseeing the excavation works at this site. For three continuous years, without a month's break, dedicated teams have worked tirelessly, unearthing monumental structures and artifacts that provide invaluable insights into the civilization that once thrived here.
Interestingly, though the passage of time saw newer constructions built over the ancient town, the treasures buried beneath remained largely untouched. Today, visitors and researchers can marvel at the remnants of an ancient theatre, city walls, water aqueducts, and the majestic Roman Bridge that once served as a vital connection for the townsfolk.
Among the most significant discoveries at the theatre site are statues and figures believed to be nearly two millennia old. These include captivating sculptures of Medusa, mask statues, and grotesque figures, each telling its own tale of art, culture, and mythology from that time. Additionally, the stage section of the ancient theatre unveiled an impressive vault (tonoz) – an architectural marvel of its age.
The professionalism and dedication of the expert teams working on the site are commendable. They remain focused on their mission, aiming to complete the excavation work within this year. Such a target showcases their commitment not just to uncovering the past but also to preserving it for future generations.
Yet, amid the dust, tools, and artifacts, there is another story unfolding in Prusias ad Hypium: a tale of music, camaraderie, and joy. Enter the 'Keman Brothers' and their close relatives. Four musician brothers - Ömer, Muhammed, Yalçın, and Gökhan Keman, along with their relatives Aykut Yıkın and Hakan Apaydın, bring their musical prowess to the site.
Not only do they assist in the arduous excavation work, but they also transform tea and meal breaks into delightful musical escapades. With instruments like the kanun, darbuka, clarinet, and violin in tow, these six musicians – known locally as the 'Keman Brothers' – often offer mini-concerts amidst the ancient ruins. Their affiliation doesn't end here; they also serve in Düzce Municipality's band and Janissary band.
The Prusias ad Hypium Old Town in Düzce is more than just an archaeological site. It's a testament to human civilization, craftsmanship, and the relentless spirit of discovery.
