Mel Gibson’s critically acclaimed directorial features are equal parts successful, controversial, and gruesomely adults-only. With an interesting list of films under his belt (as well as a largely well-known acting career), Gibson has become a cult favorite beyond the individual success of his movies. Though he doesn’t have anything officially on the books, here are all the rumored projects of the past decade or so of Gibson’s career to satiate the mega-fans.
The biggest question on everyone's mind is when the long-awaited fifth Lethal Weapon sequel will show up, with talks circulating as early as 2007. Rumor has it that a story has already been formulated, and Gibson would take up the role of director as well as star following previous director Richard Donner’s death.
Gibson had other film project plans with Donner, including a mystery film under the working title Sam And George. Unfortunately, Donner passed away in 2021.
This is another hot topic, which has been discussed since 2016. Apparently, Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace might be involved in a “resurrection” plotline.
Gibson has been eager for a Hacksaw Ridge follow-up after just missing a Best Director win. This film may be about the USS Laffey, which survived numerous kamikaze attacks in 1945 while stationed north of Okinawa.
This one has not had much chatter for years now, but at one time, Leonardo DiCaprio was attached to star. Berserker was set to follow Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto with similarly period-authentic foreign language dialogue.
The story of the Jewish rebel warriors who took control of Judea over 2000 years ago, but has since likely fallen through due to criticism from Jewish leaders who found The Passion of the Christ to have anti-semitic sentiments. Due to records of racist remarks documented publicly and by the film’s screenwriter himself, Joe Eszterhas left or was removed from the project.
