Van Cat House Villa: A Sanctuary for the Unique Feline of Turkey

In recent years, the fascination with domestic cats has grown worldwide, and one cat that has garnered significant attention both globally and in Turkey is the Van cat. A native to the region of Van, this feline is not just endearing and friendly, but also critically endangered, largely due to a lack of sustained interest and preservation efforts. There was a time when Van cats were common in the Van region and could be found in almost every household. However, their numbers are dwindling rapidly, and crossbreeding poses another threat to their pure lineage.

Cultural Significance and Characteristics of the Van Cat

Locally in Van, these felines are affectionately referred to as 'Pişik'. The Van cat is not just regarded as a decorative pet by the locals. Beyond its role as a mouser, it is seen as a friend and a cherished family member. Old tales suggest that Van cats once spent their summers in the mountains and winters in homes. Today, it's rare to come across a Van cat that hunts on the slopes of Mount Erek during summers and retreats home when winter sets in.

The Van Cat: A Unique Blend of Beauty, Grace, and Loyalty

Characterized by its strikingly long, silky white fur, a tiger-like gait, a bushy tail reminiscent of a fox's, and heterochromia iridum (two different colored eyes), the Van cat is agile and smart. Its cleanliness, friendly nature, love for play, and loyalty to its owner make it a true gem among felines.

Conservation Efforts: The Role of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University

A beacon of hope for these exquisite creatures is the Van Cat Research Center set up under the Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYÜ). At the center's Van Cat House Villa, an impressive 100 furry paws are adopted every year. With their unique characteristics and captivating mismatched eyes, Van cats stand as one of the most valued treasures of the city, drawing attention from both local and international tourists.

A Tourist Attraction: The Van Cat House Villa Experience

Visitors to the Van Cat House Villa can both play with and photograph these cats. The facility boasts features like ventilation areas, pools, playrooms, and lounges. But the center isn't just about showcasing these cats; there's ongoing scientific research to increase the Van cat population and maintain their pure lineage. With the help of breeding cats, the center nurtures new kittens every year. Out of the kittens born in two cycles throughout the year, 100 are adopted under the 'A Van Cat for Every Home' initiative.

A Comprehensive Care and Adoption Program

Before being handed over to their new owners against a set fee, each cat is vaccinated and provided with an 'international health card' detailing its name, breed, sex, eye color, birth date, tail characteristics, color, hearing status, identity, and chip number.

Rescuing from the Brink of Extinction

The efforts of the center have seen tremendous success. From being on the brink of extinction years ago, the Van cat's numbers have risen, ensuring their survival for future generations.
