1. Musical References (Murat Evgin)
The most tangible connection to Turkey in the series emerges in its use of music. Music supervisor Thomas Golubic and Vince Gilligan have chosen to use covers of cult songs in different languages to create the atmosphere for the series:
'Nobody Told Me' (John Lennon): In the finale of the second episode, the Turkish version of this iconic song, performed and arranged by Murat Evgin ('Bugünleri de mi Görecektik?'), is used. In this version, Evgin has added a touch of Anatolian flavor to the song by using traditional Turkish instruments such as the kanun, cümbüş, and darbuka.
'People Are Strange' (The Doors): In later episodes of the series (around the 6th episode), another Turkish cover is featured. This suggests a particular interest in Turkish music in the series' musical identity.
2. The 'Carol es Turca' Joke
In the series, a character from Paraguay, Manousos, mishears the main character Carol Sturka's name and notes it down in his notebook as 'Es Turca' (She's Turkish). This has led to theories among fans about whether this is a mystery about Carol's origins or just a wordplay typical of Vince Gilligan's style.
3. Istanbul and the 'Bora Çolak' Character
The script of the series reportedly includes references to a character in Istanbul (named Bora Çolak according to some sources) and a 'candyman uncle' in Turkey. As the distribution of immune individuals worldwide is discussed, it is suggested that Turkey is also part of this global narrative.
