According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp plans to integrate Google's Live Translation feature into its chats.
With this feature, users will be able to translate texts in foreign languages directly through WhatsApp without having to switch to other apps.
Users will also be able to use the translation feature offline with WhatsApp!
The Live Translation feature processes data on the device and does not send personal data to Google's cloud. Therefore, users will be able to use the translation feature offline. However, it is noted that this feature may initially be limited to certain languages.
Since the feature being developed for the Android client is still in the development phase, it is too early to provide definite information about when it will be available or what features it will have.
With Apple recently launching an API for the Translate app, it is possible that WhatsApp will offer a similar feature to iOS users. However, there is currently no reference to this feature in the iPhone app, and it is unclear if this feature is on WhatsApp's roadmap.
