Amasra is a tourist district in the Bartın province of the Western Black Sea region, renowned for its historical and natural beauty. Formerly known as Sesamos in ancient times, Amasra has been home to many civilisations, including the Romans, Byzantines, Genoese and Ottomans. It is described as a ‘window to the sea’ due to its two natural harbours, the historic Kemere Bridge connecting Boztepe Island to the mainland, its strategic location on the Black Sea coast, and its walls.

Today, Amasra is small but quite lively in terms of tourism, with a population of approximately 6,000. The district's economy relies heavily on fishing, tourism, and handicrafts. Amasra salad and fresh seafood make the town particularly appealing from a gastronomic point of view. The Çekiciler Market, famous for its handicrafts, offers visitors souvenirs made from wood carvings.

When to Visit Amasra?

Amasra has a typical Black Sea climate, with rainy and cool weather throughout the year. This gives the region a distinct atmosphere in all four seasons. However, the most suitable times to travel are May–June, spanning from the last days of spring to the beginning of summer, and September–October, when the scorching heat of summer has passed.

During the summer months, the sea water is more suitable for swimming and the weather is more stable. However, crowds increase, especially on weekends, as the district experiences a surge in visitors.

In spring and autumn, watching nature awaken or the colourful spectacle of the leaves is a distinct pleasure. During these periods, you can find a peaceful environment and capture enchanting shots for photographers.

Although the region is rainy in winter, the opening of the fishing season brings more variety to restaurants and a more authentic atmosphere.

How to Get to Amasra?

Road transport: From Istanbul, you can reach Amasra in approximately 5–6 hours by private vehicle via the TEM–Bolu–Gerede–Bartın route. For those travelling from Ankara, the journey takes an average of 3.5–4 hours. The road from Bartın to Amasra is an extremely pleasant route, taking approximately 20–30 minutes through lush green forest landscapes. Minibuses and coaches run regularly throughout the day from Bartın city centre to Amasra, with services almost every half hour.

Bus transport: There are direct bus services to Bartın from many cities in Turkey. From Bartın Bus Station, you can easily reach Amasra by minibus or intercity bus. The district has its own small terminal on Zübeyde Hanım Caddesi in the Kum neighbourhood.

Air travel: The closest airport to Amasra is Zonguldak Çaycuma Airport. From there, you can travel to Amasra by road via Bartın. The journey takes approximately 1–1.5 hours.

  • Amasra Castle: The symbol of the district. Walls and gates dating back to the Genoese period are still standing. Strolling through the streets inside the castle and climbing up to the turrets with their views is very enjoyable.

  • The Historic Kemere Bridge: A single-arched stone bridge connecting Boztepe Island with the centre of Amasra. It dates back to Roman times. A great spot for taking photographs.

  • Amasra Museum: Small but quite impressive. Thanks to its archaeological artefacts and ethnography sections, you can get to know the history of the region up close. Open from 08:30 to 20:00 during the summer months; closed on Mondays. MuseumPass is valid.

  • Weeping Tree & Boztepe: Famous for its cypress tree, from which water drips drop by drop from the tips of its leaves due to natural moisture. One of the most romantic spots offering a panoramic view of the Black Sea's two ports and Tavşan Island. You can take a break at the tea garden next to it while enjoying the view.

  • Çekiciler Market: A must-visit market for handcrafted wooden products, souvenirs, and local delicacies.
