Why Director Christopher Nolan Refuses to Use a Phone or Email

Acclaimed director Christopher Nolan has famously avoided using a phone and email since 2012, and he recently confirmed that he still maintains this unique habit. But what drives one of Hollywood's most successful filmmakers to shun modern communication tools? Let’s dive into the intriguing reasons behind Nolan's old-school approach.👇

We think there's hardly anyone who hasn’t heard of Christopher Nolan, one of the best directors of recent years.

He has directed many high-quality films.

But did you know that Christopher Nolan doesn’t use a phone?

Yes, Nolan finds certain technologies not quite 'suitable' for himself.

In addition to that, he doesn't use email and doesn't connect his computer to the internet.

The director revealed this interesting tech confession in 2012, and in a 2023 interview, he mentioned that he still maintains this habit.

The reason is to avoid distractions.

This way, he can be more creative and explore different approaches during the scriptwriting process. 'If I'm writing my own scripts, spending all day on a smartphone wouldn't be very beneficial for me. When I moved to Los Angeles in 1997, no one had cell phones, and I didn’t get caught up in the smartphone craze,' Nolan said, adding that in 2020, he occasionally used a flip phone.

As mentioned, Nolan doesn’t use email either.

For example, he says he delivered the script for Oppenheimer by hand. He even uses a landline to reach people when an issue arises.
