In a jaw-dropping medical incident, an 18-year-old woman from Söke, Turkey, surprised doctors with an unusual complaint: she had swallowed an 18-centimeter dining fork. Dr. Akay Edizsoy from the General Surgery Department said, 'When I first heard about this case, I thought it couldn't be true.'
Because the fork posed a risk of injuring the esophagus and trachea, it was not removed through endoscopy. To prevent life-threatening injuries, the doctors decided to perform surgery, making an incision in the patient's stomach to extract the fork. The doctors explained the decision, noting, 'It couldn’t be pulled out like a nail or pin.'
The patient, who remained in intensive care after the procedure, is reportedly recovering well.
While he has encountered cases involving swallowed objects like coins, pins, and nails, swallowing such a large fork is extremely rare. Dr. Edizsoy added that when he first heard about the case, he doubted it was true, saying, 'The patient is 18 years old and is a foreign national. Her Turkish is limited, so we thought there might have been a misunderstanding. But when we took her X-ray, we really did see a fork in her esophagus.'
